Product Description Tours the park, documenting the struggle for survival of Yellowstone's animals through three consecutive seasons.
Amazon.com Like another of David Attenborough's epic BBC documentary series, Planet Earth, Yellowstone, narrated by the charismatic Peter Firth, links seemingly disparate elements in ecosystems to teach interconnectedness and wilderness ethics. The BBC is still at the forefront of nature documentaries that promote environmentalism, and this one marks yet another milestone in progressive ecological education through film. Taking a wide view of America's first national park, Yellowstone is demarcated episodically by season, beginning with winter and ending with the following autumn. Each show combines footage of the flora and fauna in its chosen habitat. Yet rather than dramatizing the narrative through anthropomorphizing animals, the film achieves its drama through the detailed geographical and geological information about why and how Yellowstone became such a spectacular location. The first episode, "Winter," opens with a wolf pack prowling the snow for weak elk and proceeds to show stunning, rare clips of red foxes, river otters, and bison foraging or hunting to survive in the frigid climate. All these animals merely populate a scene explained as a set of valleys carved by weather. One sees massive elk and pronghorn antelope migrations from aerial views. In "Summer" one gets a much-needed dose of baby animal footage to balance all that starvation and ice. Wolf pups and bear cubs frolicking in streams will please any viewer. Flowers bloom around glacial lakes, otter and buffalo courtships unfold, and other mammals lazily bask in the sunshine before wildfire season. "Autumn" focuses less on animals than on volcanic action in the 20,000 acres of wild space. In all, a holistic picture emerges, one in which weather and geography are crucial to life. While Yellowstone only briefly covers the impact of tourism on the park, it clearly indicates that wilderness must remain wild for such delicate balance to exist. --Trinie Dalton

Great photography; poor guide to Yellowstone August 26, 2010 History Man (Potomac, Maryland USA) I had expected this video would identify different sections of the park so that viewers could get a good idea of what they looked like before visiting Yellowstone. However, this is a nature video, and a very good one, that does not do that. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about wildlife, fauna and flora in Yellowstone during the different seasons of the years. The photography and narration are excellent. So I'm not panning this, just suggesting you look elsewhere for a video guide to the park.
Great footage, but slow pace July 7, 2010 D. J. Nardi (Washington, DC) Yellowstone: Battle for Life [Blu-ray] is a good documentary of Yellowstone, don't expect the fast pace and drama from BBC's Life (narrated by David Attenborough) [Blu-ray]. Like all of the BBC Nature Unit's work, Yellowstone has incredible footage, especially in blu-ray. The contrasts between winter and summer are truly remarkable. However, the narration is a bit dry and the pace of the documentary is a bit slow. Furthermore, there aren't as many memorable scenes (although there are a few good wolf hunts, and nice shots of hummingbirds feeding their children). Overall, I'd recommend renting rather than buying this, unless you have a particular love for Yellowstone National Park.
Great DVD June 28, 2010 Book Reader (Mt. Laurel, NJ) Yellowstone Battle for Life is a wonderful dvd. The film takes you through the seasons of Yellowstone and gives you the perspective of the animals that live in Yellowstone. It helps you to understand the balance of life between the predators and prey and how each has an advantage.
Another Great BBC Series June 5, 2010 Moviegeek (California) I thoroughly enjoyed Yellowstone:Battle for Life. The cinematography is stunning and the narration is top-notch. At 150min you can watch all three titles in one sitting, I'm not sure why they skipped Spring though.
I rented the Blu-ray from Netflix and after watching I couldn't wait to buy it.
Another excellent title from BBC May 31, 2010 Paul Huang (Los Altos, CA United States) In short, this is another beautiful documentary series from BBC. If you enjoy the planet earth, you do not want to miss this one. This title, however, is not a yellowstone tour guide. Instead, it focuses more on the ecosystem of the yellowstone. I enjoy all three episodes, and find the photography just elegant and stunning, especially when viewed in a blu-ray format. I have been to Yellowstone twice but all during the summer. This title really serves its purpose for me and compliments the parts I never got to see of the yellowstone.
