Product Description Bluray Disc
Amazon.com It's hard to believe Ridley Scott's handsome epic won't become the cinematic touchstone of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the sum of its parts, delivering a vital, mostly engrossing tale following Balian (Orlando Bloom), a lonely French blacksmith who discovers he's a noble heir and takes his father's (Liam Neeson) place in the center of the universe circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here, grand battles and backdoor politics are key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan fashion an excellent storyline to tackle the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings, Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited yet substantial role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), hold an uneasy truce between Christians (who hold the city) and Muslims while factions champ at the bit for blood. There are good and evildoers on both sides, with the Knights Templar taking the brunt of the blame; Balian plans to find his soul while protecting Baldwin and the people. The look of the film, as nearly everything is from Scott, is impressive: his CGI-infused battle scenes rival the LOTR series and, with cinematographer John Mathieson, create postcard beauty with snowy French forests and the vast desert (filmed in Morocco and Spain). An excellent supporting cast, including Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and David Thewlis, also help make the head and heart of the film work. Many critics pointed out that Bloom doesn't have the gravitas of Russell Crowe in the lead (then again, who does?), but it's the underdeveloped character and not the actor that hurts the film and impacts its power. Balian isn't given much more to do than be sullen and give an occasional big speech, alongside his perplexing abilities for warfare tactics and his wandering moral compass (whose sole purpose seems to be to put a love scene in the movie). Note: all the major characters except Neeson's are based on fact, but many are heavily fictionalized. --Doug Thomas

Great Movie, Director's Cut is 10x better than Theatrical Version August 18, 2010 Gekko I originally saw the theatrical version and was highly disappointed. I kind of felt lost through the whole movie and the battles seemed anti-climactic, probably due to not knowing the characters well enough. It looked like it had a lot of potential but was just too scattered.
I bought the director's cut blu-ray based on all the reviews on Amazon and it lived up to the hype. The director's cut is much easier to follow and is a great movie. Blu-ray looks and sounds great and it's one of those movies you can put in to show off your home theater. Like everyone else has said, if you like epic war and history movies like this and you were disappointed with the theatrical version you owe it to yourself to check out the director's cut.
good period movie August 14, 2010 Robert A. Briggs (Independence KS USA) good action movie about the end of the crusade to the holy lands. Good cast.
Magnificent! August 5, 2010 Yisel (Miami, FL) (This is a review for Kingdom of Heaven - The Director's Cut Four-Disc Special Edition)
I am a fan of Orlando Bloom, Ridley Scott and this type of movie, so when I saw the trailer of Kingdom of Heaven I was really exited about it...it looked very promising. I went the very first day to the movie theater with my girlfriends and we enjoyed the film but at the same time I was disappointed. I didn't understand many things...the movie looked rushed and everything happened so fast that I left the theater wanting more.
I didn't buy the DVD when it came out (I own all Orlando Bloom's movies) because I didn't want to see again what could have been a great movie and wasn't. Then I found out about this set and after reading some of the reviews I decided to buy it even though I couldn't imagine how big a difference a few more scenes would make....well let me tell you one thing...this director cut is a true masterpiece! It was like watching a complete different movie. When you see it you realize how badly mutilated the theatrical version was and I can't imagine Ridley Scott's frustration after seeing his great work destroyed that way.
Give this movie a second chance! Watch the Director's Cut and you will be pleasantly surprised....it is soooo good.....this is a set you will treasure....don't waste your money buying the regular DVD.
Director's Cut much better than theatrical cut! August 5, 2010 M. Berndt I watched the original version of "Kingdom of Heaven" in theaters and felt it to be a "so-so" movie. My guess is the studio told Scott to cut almost every scene that didn't have then rising star Orlando Bloom. The result was mediocre theatrical cut. The Directors cut is much better. With the added scenes the film still isn't as amazing as it would aspire to be but is much improved.
The Crusades July 20, 2010 Joseph Adams (Superior, WI USA) A young knight during the Crusades who must battle overwhelming forces to save his people and fulfill true destiny. One of the only films in awhile I actually enjoyed watching. I would recommend it. The Knights Templars was the largest branch of Christianity. They were warrior monks who because of social pressures made it so they were the standard bearers of Christianity.
