Complicated to the point of viewer exhaustion, Push is a hard-to-follow and often silly work of science fiction about refugees from a secret U.S. government program simply referred to as "the Division." Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans play the children of psychically gifted parents victimized by the Division. (She's a seer, he's got mild telekinetic abilities.) Neither wants to end up forced to cooperate with Djimon Hounsou's determined operator trying to create the ultra-"pusher," i.e., a subject so gifted they can work major miracles with their mind. The odd thing is that the story is set in China, where gang action and general exotica have a way of obscuring the story proper. Things get a little more interesting when the odd pairing of Fanning and Evans is joined by a few other interesting actors (Ming Na, Cliff Curtis, Camille Belle) playing ex-Division types with psychic abilities. For a while, an "X-Men"-like vibe starts to build, but then quickly dissipates in a script practically drunk on upending audience expectations every few minutes. Nearly two hours long, Push wears down one's tolerance pretty quickly, yet manages to leave one feeling as if the story is unfinished by end credits. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars what was the point?   March 6, 2010
Kevin Hunter (Los Angeles, CA)
This movie suffers from a confusing plot. All the characters are in search of a vile that kills paranormals, but you can't figure out what the film is really about. What is everyone doing and why? What keeps the movie going is really just the performances. The actors appear to take the work very seriously, but all I can think of is that the script must've looked great on paper. The movie is interesting, lame, ridiculous, pointless, but engaging all the same, not enough to watch twice. Why is the vile so important? How come so many have guns put to one another's heads throughout this with endless talking, but no one actually pulls the trigger? How come the good guys psychic powers are exceptional, except they seem to miss a beat when the bad guys show up and suddenly can't perform well? It's also unclear whether the Division is good or evil. Other than fine performances this movie lacks a point.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking action film   February 28, 2010

Very thought provoking film. Not a movie you want to watch while doing other thing. You can easily miss an important piece of information. I really enjoyed it. Not just an action movie.

5 out of 5 stars woah.....   February 6, 2010
C. Brad Arnold (USA)
push was a wonderful film, the whole movie was gripping, HUGE cliff-hanger ending.
i definately cannot wait for the second installment to come out.
i would definately reccomend this, but it does have quite a few frightening scenes, so i would pre-view this before you would allow your smaller children to watch it...

bottom line, great movie.

3 out of 5 stars Push-over   January 31, 2010

I can see why this movie didn't make in in the theaters. You have to be into this genreget the show. The different names for the abilities (Mover, Stitch, Watcher, etc) can get a bit comfusing at times, but all in all a fun movie. So fix a cocktail, slip it in the DVD and enjoy the movie. I plan on watching it a couple (or more) times.
